WELCOME to this issue of the CEO Success Report!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hello again. I'm Gary Lockwood, President of CEO Success.

Welcome back once again to the CEO Success Report for this first
issue of the year. I know you have no shortage of material to read
and I thank you for choosing to read our newsletter.

When my sons were very young, I taught them a game. In turn, that
game taught me a valuable lesson that still works for me today.

My Thought-Starter today outlines the game, "Three Best Things".
Play the game and you will restore your confidence and your
sense of well-being. Start today and gain a new perspective, a
higher energy level and increased creativity

May I ask a small favor? Please forward this issue to other CEOs
and company presidents who may be interested in receiving
these messages. Thank you.

We work hard to provide practical ideas, thought-provoking concepts
and useful information for you. Please give me some feedback
about this issue or about the website. Send your comments me at
   mailto:Gary@CEOSuccess.com

And now for our guest article this month...

Many organizations realize that with today's educated workforce
it no longer makes sense to have managers or supervisors "watch
their employees work." With much of today's work environment
being global, virtual, distributed, fast-paced and "always-on", it
is almost impossible to execute a traditional manager/supervisor
role. Is it really necessary?

What do we need to know about moving from manager to coach?

Our guest article this month is by Robert Knowlton. In his article,
we hear what Robert has to say about this transition.

Read more about Robert at the end of his article.

I hope you enjoy receiving these articles and ideas to
help you sharpen your thinking about being an effective CEO.

My wish is that you use the ideas in the CEO Success Report to
get the results you really want. If you want some help in putting
them into practice, or if you have questions, email or call.

As you know, our specialty is Increasing the Effectiveness
and Enhancing the Lives of CEOs and business owners.

Enjoy this issue with my compliments.

Sincerely,
Gary Lockwood
CEO Success

    The Three Best Things
     By Gary Lockwood

My two sons, Dan and Doug, were five and six years old.

On their fist day of school, we started a new game. At dinner that
evening, I asked, "Boys, what was the fun-est thing you did today"?

Watching their response, I could tell what they were thinking. "Oh-Oh;
Daddy's on a new kick again". Regardless, Doug and Dan each told
of something fun and interesting they did that day. I contributed by
relating to them something weird and funny that had happened at
my office that day (something weird was happening at my office
almost every day, it seems).

We laughed at each other's stories and went on to enjoy a delightful
dinner together.

The next evening, I again asked them, "Boys, what was the fun-est
thing you did today"? This time, they each had one ready to tell. And
I once again told them about something weird and funny that had
happened at my office that day. As the first evening, we laughed and
had a good time with this.

Each evening at dinner, I asked the same question. By the end of the
first week, the boys could see that this was going to be a regular
thing. They came to the dinner table already knowing what their
evening's story would be.

In the weeks to follow, Doug and Dan each had at least one fun thing
to tell and sometimes two or three. They even competed to see who
had the fun-est story. Dan would say, "I want to go first. My story is
better than Doug's".

After a while, it almost seemed that these boys were making fun
things happen during the day, just so they could tell about it at
dinner. We laughed a lot and enjoyed each story.

Where was their focus? That's right; on the positive things that were
going on with them. During this time of their lives, do you suppose
that Dan and Doug had any unpleasant things happening to them
or around them? Of course they did! We all have negative events
and negative people in our lives.

I just didn't want the negatives to be their primary focus. I wanted
my sons to see past the unpleasantness around them and
experience the positive.

How many times do you end your day stewing about?
      The heavy traffic
The report that didn't get finished
People who haven't returned your calls
      Deals that are dragging on
      The computer's not working correctly
And on, and on, and on.

I am not suggesting that you ignore the challenges in your life. I AM
suggesting that you just not dwell there.

Successful entrepreneurs develop their positive attitudes because
they feed on progress.

At the end of each day, instead of recounting all the difficulties and
all that remains undone, write your accomplishments. Write the
three most positive, interesting things that happened to you this
day (the fun-est things). You can literally end each day on a positive
note by jotting down the three best things that happened this day.

These may be things that happened to you, people around you,
events that just felt good to you, or just a sunny day. Some of the
most rewarding things to capture are your own actions. Often, there
is no one around to acknowledge your achievements, especially
those little ones that happen in the course of the day. By focusing
a few minutes on your accomplishments, you give yourself a little
pat on the back and recognize progress, even when small.

Having a positive attitude toward your business and toward life in
general may be one of the most important characteristics of suc-
cessful people. In my years of experience as a Business Coach,
I have observed many successful entrepreneurs. With very few
exceptions, those who are successful and happy have developed
and maintained a positive outlook.

A positive attitude is not accidental. Successful entrepreneurs
know how to create a positive attitude and positive motivation for
themselves. They don't just wait for it to happen.

Start today. Write down or tell someone about the three best things
that happened today. This recognition of the positive things in your
life will restore your confidence and your sense of well-being. You
will likely gain a new perspective, a higher energy level and
increased creativity.

Start today. "What was the fun-est thing you did today"?

      Moving From Manager To Coach
      by Robert Knowlton

These days it seems the "coaching" word is everywhere. Business
owners coach staff, as do managers and supervisors. Parents
coach kids for life skills. We're even coaching ourselves.
Unfortunately, just because we change the name from "managing"
to "coaching" doesn't mean we've developed the new skills
required to "coach" successfully. Here are some of the basic
skills/strategies/competencies which are part of the process of
coaching. Good coaching skills can make the difference between
getting performance and getting excellence out of yourself and
your associates.

Knowing your outcomes

It is essential as a Coach to know the outcomes you expect. You
then need to be able to clearly communicate the outcomes to the
person being coached. Identifying your expectations of the end
result gives a clear goal. Outcomes can range from setting major
career objectives to where and how the incoming mail gets sorted.
For successful arrival at your destination, you need to know where
you are going.

Assess resources

You then need to assess what resources are necessary to get there.
We all need training and that's why you are coaching someone --
to define clearly the skills and strategies necessary to get the
desired result. Maybe someone needs to learn to read a map,
master a specific computer program, think in the big picture, or
develop a smooth phone manner.

Implement your plan

Once you know the skill or skills to be developed, implement a plan.
Are the resources available? How long will it take to learn? What
are the specific steps necessary and by when are you expected to
reach the goal?

Example

Joan, a lawyer and assistant general counsel for a large company,
was frustrated with one of her assistants. She felt the assistant was
not following through and keeping Joan current on a project's status.
Was it complete, was it progressing, or was it stalled? Joan thought
she was a good communicator but realized she was not getting
what she wanted. After discussing the problem with her coach, Joan
realized she may not have been clear with her assistant. They sat
down together and this time Joan knew the precise result she was
looking for. She wanted weekly written updates. Joan coached her
assistant to see the "big picture" and how reporting fit in. Then
together they came up with a plan for the assistant to implement
and scheduled follow up reviews.

Put it in writing

After you have set targets, assessed the skill requirements and set
out a plan, it's helpful to put your agreements in writing. Depending
on the size and breadth of the project, your agreement could have
many check points or opportunities for feedback and assessment.
Coach for win/win and everyone will be more productive.

QUOTES to use in your staff meeting this month
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Is it so small a thing
   To have enjoyed the sun,
To have lived light in the spring,
To have loved, to have thought,
   To have done?
                 Matthew Arnold, British poet (1822-88)

Remember that no man loses any other life than this which
he now lives, nor lives any other than this which he now loses.
Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor (121 -180 AD)

    If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed;
    if in terms of ten years, plant trees;
if in terms of 100 years, teach the people
                  Confucius

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall.
Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day.
Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, until
       the sun goes down.
And this is all that life really means.
                   Robert Louis Stevenson
